چکیده

Abstract. The interstellar medium (ISM) reveals strongly inhomogeneous structures at every scale. These structures do not seem completely random since they obey certain power laws. Larson’s law (1981) σ ∝ R and the plausible assumption of virial equilibrium justify to consider fractals as a possible description of the ISM. In the following we investigate how self-gravitation, differential rotation and dissipation affect the matter distribution in galaxies. To this end we have performed 3Dsimulations for self-gravitating local boxes embedded in a larger disk, extending the 2D-method of Toomre & Kalnajs (1991) and Wisdom & Tremaine (1988). Our simulations lead to the conclusion that gravitation, shearing and dissipation can be dominantly responsible for maintaining an inhomogeneous and eventually a fractal distribution of the matter.

Local stability criterion for self-gravitating disks in modified gravity

We study local stability of self-gravitating fluid and stellar disk in the context of modified gravity theories which predict a Yukawa-like term in the gravitational potential of a point mass. We investigate the effect of such a Yukawa-like term on the dynamics of self-gravitating disks. More specifically, we investigate the consequences of the presence of this term for the local stability of t...

1 Fragmentation in Kinematically Cold Disks

Gravity is scale free. Thus gravity may form similar structures in self-gravitating systems on different scales. Indeed, observations of the interstellar medium, spiral disks and cosmic structures, reveal similar characteristics. The structures in these systems are very lumpy and inhomo-geneous. Moreover some of these structures do not seem to be of random nature, but obey certain power laws. M...

Influence of viscosity laws on the transition to the self-gravitating part of accretion disks

In this paper we obtain a new solution for accretion disks influenced by self-gravity using the viscosity law proposed by Heyvaerts et al. (1996). We show how to solve analytically the problem taking into account self-gravity. Using this new viscosity law, we obtain a slightly different solution (compared with the standard one) for the transition between the non self-gravitating and the self-gr...

Scaling behavior in a stochastic self-gravitating system.

A system of stochastic differential equations for the velocity and density of classical self-gravitating matter is investigated by means of the field theoretic renormalization group. The existence of two types of large-scale scaling behavior, associated with physically admissible fixed points of the renormalization-group equations, is established. Their regions of stability are identified and t...
